MHS Team Breaks the Ice at Gabrielino Invitational

On Saturday, September 10, the Maranatha Speech and Debate Team competed in the annual Gabrielino Icebreaker Tournament 2022.
The Icebreaker Tournament incorporates three improvisational events for students to compete against other schools. Maranatha students have been preparing for the tournament in class by honing their skills in improvisational acting, improvisational speaking, and spontaneous debate. Coach Pat Mesisca ‘92 said, “I am excited to have officially kicked off the Speech and Debate tournament season. It was exciting to see so many students and families support our Speech and Debate program as we continue to rebuild our program after two years of online competition. It truly was a joy to get back to in-person speech and debate competition.”

The Speech and Debate program will be highlighted on September 20, 2022 at the school’s annual Club Rush event. Maranatha students who are not enrolled in the class, but who still desire to be on the Speech and Debate team, should sign up with Mr. Mesisca during Club Rush. Beginning in October, the Speech and Debate team will meet during business lunches to prepare for upcoming competitions. Their fall tournament competitions include: Novice Debate on Friday, November 4, and Varsity Debate on Saturday, November 5, at Shurr High School in Montebello. The Fall Varsity Speech Competition will be held on Saturday, December 10, at Gabrielino High School. Dates, times, and locations are subject to change.
