Evening of Christmas: Behind the Scenes

The first Christmas story is all about God visiting this planet in the midst of a mess. We asked the students to describe how God has reached out to them during these trying times. Their testimony became the backdrop for an exciting exploration of the true Christmas story. Not the Hollywood version, but the real one where God visits and brings hope, even in the roughest of circumstances.
"Evening of Christmas" featured performances both live and pre-recorded performances and was streamed live from the Ambassador Auditorium on Dec. 4. The recording is available to view for FREE on Vimeo-On-Demand.

Rope

For those unfamiliar with Alfred Hitchcock’s 1948 film of the same name, Rope is a murder mystery written by Patrick Hamilton in 1929. Set in London, the story begins with two Oxford Undergraduates strangling their fellow classmate, Ronald Kentley, to death with (you guessed it) a piece of rope. Brandon and Granillo believe they have just committed “the perfect crime” and to enhance the macabre nature of the evening, invite a number of friends and colleagues over for a dinner party serving the food over the very chest where Mr. Kentley resides. A thrilling game of cat and mouse begins when one of their guests, the esteemed poet Ruth Cadell, arrives and uses good old fashioned detective work to sniff out the culprits. You’re invited to the perfect crime. We’re expecting you.

Dance Company, Mixed Ensemble, and Orchestra tell the story of a young artist who tries to bring warring tribes together through art, only to have her art destroyed by the very tribes she is trying to reconcile. But a miracle happens when the fragments of her broken art begin the process of reconciliation, and, in the process, become an entirely new piece of art. Come and experience this story, which is an echo of II. Corinthians 5:18 where we are called to a ministry of reconciliation; bringing those warring tribes back into relationship with the greatest artist of all—the God we worship.

The Cat in the Hat introduces us to Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the “Whos.” Horton faces a double challenge of protecting the “whos” and an abandoned egg left in his care. Adventure ensues, complete with amazing music and dance as this world comes to life on the stage of the Ambassador Auditorium.

Born into a world that did not know, or chose to ignore who he was, Jesus lived a life and died a death that brought salvation to us all. That’s what we both celebrate and commemorate at Christmas. Our Mixed Ensemble, Orchestra and Dance Company will seek to retell this story; a story where the Son of God brought down power through weakness and provided life through his death. This is one of the “can’t miss” events this season!

Twelve Angry Jurors
November 8-9, 2019The scene is a courtroom where a nineteen-year-old man is on trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. One of the jurors states that “we should not make it a personal thing.” But personal it becomes, with each juror revealing his or her own character, as a new murder threat is born before their eyes. And twelve seemingly normal people become “Twelve Angry Jurors.” Don’t miss Maranatha’s production of this classic piece of dramatic literature.

Our Spring Showcase “Once Upon a Dream” is about exploring the dreams and visions we’ve experienced or witnessed that inspired us. Join our Dance Company, Mixed Ensemble and Orchestra as we dance, sing and play the dreams that God has given us to drive us to realize the impossible. From the “silly” dreams we experienced in childhood to the powerful God-given visions of great leaders in the world, God is inspiring us to be creative and have faith in the things that cannot always be seen.

Wizard of Oz

There was “no place like the Ambassador Auditorium” in March 2019 as Maranatha Performing Arts presented “The Wizard of Oz.” This beloved tale, in which a Kansas farm girl travels over the rainbow to discover the magical power of home, has been entertaining audiences for generations. Join us for an evening of wicked witches, flying monkeys, and magical moments in the Land of Oz in this full-scale production of this timeless story.

Evening of Christmas: "Joy"
December 7-8, 2018
We use the word “joy” so much during this holiday season. We sing “Joy to the World,” and “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.” We bring tidings of “comfort and joy.” But the joy of the Christmas story is contained in the story of a young couple, separated from home and family and forced to deliver their first child in a stable. That is the difference between joy and happiness. Joy isn’t based on circumstance as much as perspective. Our presentation of “Evening of Christmas” this year explores the true meaning of that word joy through music and dance. Come join us we usher in the Christmas season with Mixed Ensemble, Maranatha Orchestra, and Dance Company.
