One Semifinalist and Three Commended Students Honored in 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program
Maranatha High School is proud to announce that four seniors have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) for their exceptional academic achievement in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Griffin Lee has been named a National Merit Semifinalist, placing among the top 1% of high school seniors nationwide. He is one of approximately 16,000 students across the country to earn this prestigious distinction, qualifying him to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships to be awarded next spring.
Teachers describe Griffin as hard-working, enthusiastic, witty, and kind. Known for his sharp intellect and natural curiosity, he approaches learning with thoughtfulness and integrity, never shying away from challenging ideas or complex questions.
Joining Griffin in this national recognition are Sophia Chung, Christina Li, and Matthew Rhee, who have each been named Commended Students—placing in the top 4% of the more than 1.3 million students who took the 2024 PSAT/NMSQT exam. Commended Students represent approximately 34,000 of the highest-scoring participants in the competition and are recognized for their strong academic promise and commitment to excellence.
Maranatha High School Principal Dan Newkirk shared, “We are incredibly proud of Griffin, Sophia, Christina, and Matthew for their hard work and dedication. Their achievements are a testament not only to their individual excellence but also to the culture of learning and faith that defines Maranatha.”
The National Merit Scholarship Program honors students across the nation who demonstrate outstanding potential for academic success and leadership. Each year, these recognitions highlight the importance of cultivating intellectual curiosity and perseverance—hallmarks of a Maranatha education.
