Physics Students Harness the Sun’s Rays

This past week the Conceptual Physics classes, taught by Mr. Girma Aleme, displayed and tested their final project — a functional Solar Cooker.
Their projects were evaluated for quality of production and functionality, and required to at least be able to cook a marshmallow or hotdog. Groups of 3-4 students each worked collaboratively to create and test their solar oven. Last Friday afternoon, 12 solar cookers were put to the test under the blazing sun. “This is a fun project and a productive learning activity to demonstrate Thermodynamics (Heating by Radiation Techniques),” commented Mr. Aleme.

The solar cooker projects were judged by JPL Scientist Dr. Huang, MHS lab technician Jesse Rouse, and MHS Physics teacher Girma Aleme. The winning project was designed in collaboration by students Caroline Tan, Taylor Ota, Tiffany Godley, and Dylan Helgren.
