Maranatha’s Science Club Participates in Regional Science Olympiad

Our students were ranked in the first 12 schools out of 39 participating high schools, and received medals of participation. Congratulations to our Science Olympiad team who were coached by Maranatha Physics teacher Girma Aleme and organized by Maranatha parent volunteer, Dr. ShouhuaHuang of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

The one-day event, held at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, was hosted by the Los Angeles County of Education (LACOE). Though it was the first time that our students took part in this rigorous and challenging STEM contest, they recorded satisfactory results and acquired the necessary exposure to be well prepared and equipped for next year’s contest, and hopefully become ranked in the first six high schools to be awarded with special honors and medals of recognition.

The Los Angeles County Science Olympiad is a regional competition held between teams of students representing elementary, middle, and high schools. Winning teams advance to the Southern California Science Olympiad, and success at the state level leads to the National Science Olympiad which is held annually. The Science Olympiad is an international, non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous, academic, interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year.
