The Maranatha Baseball Team survived another CIF round and are advancing to the CIF Div. II Semi-Finals against Torrance High School on Tuesday, May 17 at 3:15 pm at Kendall Field - Torrance, CA. The boys have been swinging the bats well with every opportunity they get and the pitching rotation/depth has given this team the ability and poise to make a deep run well into CIF and potentially beyond. Coach Shupper and the team traveled to Lakewood HS on Friday, May 13, and came out victorious in a 10-7 CIF Round 3 win.
The team began the first inning on a tear, forcing the Lakewood Lancers to switch pitchers three times as the Minutemen put up 6 on the board early on. The team was led by strong hitting performances from Cam Andrews, Angelo Aleman, Cider Canon, Martin Zdunek, Mikey Ebner, Nick Cook, and Donovan Gonsal while the supporting cast stepped up big time with their infield defense.
Ebner had a shaky start on the mound, but recovered well, only giving up 3 runs through 5 innings. Jackson Hisey stepped up to provide Ebner relief, while Garrett McGuigan closed the game out in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Overall, the Minutemen came into the game confidently and showcased why their season will continue. The Lancers never had a chance to douse the flame as they were never able to close the gap on Maranatha. If Maranatha wins on Tuesday, May 17, they advance to the CIF Div. II Finals and will play the winner of: Etiwanda HS (Fontana, Ca) /Palos Verde HS either Friday, May 20 or Saturday, May 21. Game time and location TBD.
As a semi-finalist in the CIF Southern Section Championships, Maranatha has automatically qualified for the State CIF Southern California Regional Baseball Tournament taking place May 31 – June 4, 2022.
