Maranatha Students Participate in 2020 Regional Science Olympiad

Maranatha’s Science Club formed two Science Olympiad teams to participate in the Regional Los Angeles County Science Olympiad on Saturday, February 1.
Twenty-five student-members of the Science Olympiad participated alongside 37 other schools competing in each event. Our students have received medals in three events:

1. Chemistry Lab (4th place) by Samantha Wu ‘20 and James Wang ‘23
2. Sounds of Music (4th place) by Sara Wu ‘20 and Samantha Wu
3. Circuit Lab (5th place) by Hans Xing ‘21 and Abel Wang ‘20

The Los Angeles County Science Olympiad is a regional competition held between teams of students representing elementary, middle, and high schools. Winning teams advance to the Southern California Science Olympiad, and success at the state level leads to the annual National Science Olympiad. The Science Olympiad is an international, non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous, academic, interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year.

Congratulations to our Science Olympiad teams who were coached by Maranatha Science Chair Mr. Dan Newkirk, and organized by Dr. Shouhua Huang of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Maranatha parent volunteers Jacky Chen (Dorothy’s dad), Sunny Chen (Jerry Zhang’s mom), and Donna Otoshi (Peter Otoshi’s mom). Many thanks to our teams for all of their hard work!
