New Federal Tax Credit Could Expand Tuition Assistance Opportunities for Maranatha Families

Maranatha High School is closely following a new federal initiative that could make Christ-centered education more accessible to families through expanded scholarship opportunities.

Beginning January 1, 2027, the Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC) will allow eligible taxpayers to receive a federal income tax credit of up to $1,700 annually for qualifying contributions to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs). Married couples filing jointly may qualify for a combined credit of up to $3,400.

These organizations will use contributions to provide scholarships for eligible K–12 students, including assistance with private school tuition and other qualifying educational expenses.

For Maranatha, the program represents a potential new resource for families who desire a Christ-centered, university-preparatory education but need financial assistance to make it possible.

California's Participation Is Key

Participation in the EFTC program is voluntary for each state. As of the latest published IRS participation list, California has not elected to participate in 2027. Governor Gavin Newsom and state officials have an important decision to make regarding California's involvement.

In a message to the Maranatha community on October 28, Head of School Dr. Matt Ketterling encouraged families, alumni, and supporters to learn more about the initiative and consider its potential benefits and implications. Those who believe participation would benefit California's students and families are encouraged to communicate their support to Governor Newsom.

Looking Ahead

Maranatha's leadership is actively studying the program and exploring relationships with scholarship-granting organizations that could serve its students if California elects to participate.

Although qualifying contributions may begin in 2027, Maranatha is not yet soliciting EFTC contributions for its students. Additional information will be shared as California's participation status, approved organizations, and donation procedures become clearer.

Expanding access to a Maranatha education remains an important priority, reflecting the school's commitment to equipping students through a Christ-centered, university-preparatory education.
