Maranatha High School is proud to announce the hiring of Coach Susan Lai as the new Head Coach of the Swim & Dive Program. With a lifelong dedication to the sport of swimming and a heart for mentorship and faith-driven leadership, Coach Lai brings both competitive experience and a passion for developing student-athletes to their fullest potential.
Coach Lai’s swimming journey began at age seven with the Arcadia Riptides, later competing with the San Gabriel Sea Gulls (SGSG), where she qualified for the Junior Olympics and specialized in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke. She continued her career at UCLA, swimming with the Masters team and training alongside Olympic legends such as Lenny Krayzelburg and Mark Spitz.
Her coaching career began early, and has since included roles at multiple programs such as the Bruin Swim Club, the City of Alhambra Novice Team, and East Los Angeles College Women’s Swimming, where she served as an assistant coach for five seasons. Most recently, Lai was the Head Coach at Gabrielino High School, leading the Eagles to multiple CIF qualifiers, record-breaking performances, and notable collegiate signings.
“My greatest joy in coaching comes from witnessing the growth and confidence that student-athletes develop — both in the pool and as individuals,” said Coach Lai. “I’m most excited to lead with God this upcoming season, to encourage and uplift our swimmers and divers, and to bring a spirit of excellence to the Maranatha Swim & Dive program.”
Outside the pool, Lai is deeply involved in health and fitness instruction. She teaches senior fitness, Zumba, and GROOV3 Dance Fitness classes, and uses her platform to support charitable causes — including an annual Zumba fundraiser class benefiting Cancer Kinship. A former triathlete and marathon runner, Lai’s commitment to lifelong wellness mirrors her philosophy as a coach: balance, perseverance, and joy in the journey.
“Coach Lai’s depth of experience, passion for student success, and faith-centered leadership make her an outstanding addition to our coaching staff,” said Maranatha’s Director of Athletics, Ms. Alicia Vessey. She personifies Maranatha’s goal of shaping student-athletes who strive for excellence for the glory of God with integrity and purpose.”
When asked why she believes she’s a great fit for Maranatha, Lai shared, “God has blessed me with so many opportunities to learn and grow through swimming and coaching. My prayer is that He continues to guide me as I lead, teach, and support athletes to be their best.”
Her favorite Bible verse reflects her philosophy of endurance and faith:
“For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” — James 1:3
To Maranatha and its Swim and Dive team, Coach Lai offers a message of encouragement:
“God provides strength for your challenges. Swim and dive with purpose, doing everything for His glory. Let’s have an excellent season, Minutemen!”
Coach Susan Lai and the Minutemen are looking forward to their upcoming Spring season in February 2026.
