National Honor Society Promoting Service this Holiday Season

National Honor Society has a goal to promote Character, Service, Scholarship and Leadership through all Chapters.
Chapter 34658 at Maranatha High School chose their Fall Service Project to align with Maranatha’s mission of being Global Stewards and Transformative Disciples, with the pledge of 50 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

NHS members, under the guidance of President Caleb Cheung ‘19, signed up to sponsor a box for a child in need, not just of material items, but the Good News of the Gospel, plus the greater gift of prayer. NHS focused on filling boxes for “peers” ages 10-14 and sending a message of Jesus’ love and mercy for their lives. The shoeboxes consisted of small gifts, essential items, and handwritten notes of encouragement. As the deadline drew near, we were overjoyed to complete 61 boxes, ready to make a journey to a child in Africa, Asia, or South America.

When the filled shoeboxes were dropped off at Bethany Church of Sierra Madre, an official Samaritan’s Purse Collection Center, the MHS team was greeted with great excitement and love by the volunteers. Two of the volunteers were Maranatha High School alums who rejoiced greatly in the fact that Discipleship was a continued blessing flowing through Maranatha High School to the children who will soon hear about “The Greatest Journey” in their own language and hold the loving prayer and gift from a Maranatha student.

Faculty member Dianna Fowler said, “Gathered, we prayed a blessing over the boxes, that they may give the love, hope, and joy that living in Christ brings to all. The boxes have left the U.S. and are on their journey to reach children far and wide, who will be part of NHS Chapter 34658’s prayers this Advent and Christmas, that they may come to know the true meaning of The Gospel in their lives and change the world for the better.”
