Maranatha Participates in the 2021 National Science Bowl Competition
On March 20, a team of Maranatha students competed in the prestigious 2021 National Science Bowl, a nationwide academic competition designed to inspire students to further explore subjects related to STEM.
Each year, over 10,000 students across the nation apply to compete in one of over 100 regional Science Bowl competitions, which are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. In the greater Los Angeles area (including Los Angeles County and Orange County), approximately 200 schools apply, but only 24 high schools get selected to participate in the regional competition at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena.
Maranatha’s Science Bowl team consists of Dorothy Chen ‘22 (Captain), Joshua Kim ‘21, Isaac Lee ‘22, Joshua Im ‘23, and Jasmine Purnomo ‘23. The team safely met each week to practice, even during the pandemic, focusing on the areas of chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, energy science, earth, and space. The practice broadened the team members’ STEM views and inspired their exploration.
Maranatha’s Science Bowl team is led by Science teacher and team coach, Mr. Nathan Spear, and is supported by Head of School John Rouse, Principal Timothy Fenderson, Science Department Chair Dan Newkirk, JPL Scientist Dr. Shouhua Huang, and parent volunteer Mr. Jacky Chen.
