Maranatha Participates in the 2020 National Science Bowl Competition

Each year, over 10,000 students nationwide apply to compete in one of over 100 regional Science Bowl competitions, which are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. In the greater Los Angeles area (including Los Angeles County and Orange County), approximately 200 schools apply and 24 high schools get selected to participate in the regional competition at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena.

Maranatha’s Science Bowl team consisted of seniors Abel Wang (Captain), Samantha Wu, Jerry Zhang, Ian Cho, and Justin Purnomo. This team met weekly to practice and study for the competition. The Science Bowl utilizes a “buzz-in” format that tests students’ knowledge and response capability in all areas of science, including chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, energy science, earth, and space. For 2020, the Maranatha Science Club was selected to participate in the competition for the sixth year in a row and beat two teams with scores of 106-30 and 76-52, another significant achievement.

 

Maranatha’s Science Bowl team is led by science teacher and team coach Mr. Nathan Spear and supported by school science chair Mr. Dan Newkirk, JPL Scientist Dr. Shouhua Huang, and parent volunteer Jacky Chen. Congratulations to our Science Bowl Team!
