Maranatha Shatters the Ice at the 2019 Icebreaker Tournament

On Saturday, September 14, the Maranatha High School Speech & Debate Team participated in the Annual Icebreaker Tournament at Gabrielino High School.
The Speech and Debate Icebreaker Tournament featured 300 contestants composed of teams of two in improvisational speech and debate competitions. Maranatha High School's Varsity and Novice competitors have been working hard in class during the first month of the semester to prepare for the tournament and in the end, were successful. The duo of junior Justin Peters and sophomore Jonathan Jo earned a trophy finishing in the Top 10. Speech & Debate Instructor Pat Mesisca '92 said, “I am very pleased with the way this school year has started for the team. Icebreaker is a difficult tournament to compete in because students judge the students. Many of these students know each other from the same school which would give the larger schools an edge in the end results. To see a smaller school like Maranatha have a duo finish in the Top 10 of Icebreaker reveals the talent we have in our student body. While we are small, we are mighty.”

The Maranatha Speech & Debate Team will now begin preparing for the Southern California Debate League Fall Speech & Debate tournaments. Students who are not enrolled in the class but who are interested in competing this year need to report to Mr. Mesisca by October 1 to register for the 2019-2020 tournament season.
