Fancy a Cuppa?

A two-week trip to Europe just might be your perfect “cuppa” tea!
You probably know that in the British Isles, this is a friendly way to invite someone to join you in a cup of tea. But, did you know that in the United Kingdom, over 60 million cups of tea are consumed each day? And, of course, the “right” way to drink your tea, when visiting that area, is with milk - usually added first, before the tea, and often with sugar. While we’re on the topic, the Maranatha English and Visual Arts Departments are taking a group to Ireland and the U.K. in June 2020.

Don’t let the fact that the trip is sponsored by the English and Visual Arts Departments deter you. You won’t be spending the 15 days in Europe with your nose in books or only wandering around art museums. The places you will be visiting are rich in culture, history, and lush with beauty. The cities are diverse with customs and accents. It is said that you can’t go more than 25 miles without noticing a distinct change in the way the locals talk. And, of course, in Wales, everyone is bilingual with Welsh being the preferred language.

These island nations cover over 100 thousand square miles, yet a person is never more than 75 miles away from the ocean. This is why it is dotted with castles and fortresses throughout. You will be “invading” several of these landmarks including Conwy Castle, Edinburgh Castle, the Tower of London, and reliving the days of Knights and chivalry. If you prefer hobnobbing with the royals, you will enjoy a visit to Holyhead and Westminster Abbey. Also, if you want to go even further back in time to see what it would have been like to live in the days of the Romans, you can do that too, as you will be visiting the Roman Bath Houses and the remote and rugged Hadrian’s Wall. You will also go back in your time-capsule, even more, when visiting Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles. And, of course, you will venture into the world of literature and art as you catch a play at The Globe Theater, stop at the houses of Jane Austen and C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved Oxford, as well as visit the National Gallery to marvel at Leonardo DaVinci’s “Virgin of the Rocks” and Van Gogh’s “Vase with 15 Sunflowers.” There’s a little “cuppa” for everyone!
