ASL Students Translate Children’s Books to Preschoolers

Maranatha’s ASL 3 class visited Pasadena Christian Preschool to translate books using sign language.
On Monday, May 13, Maranatha faculty Devan Douglass ‘09 and her American Sign Language 3 (ASL) class went to visit Pasadena Christian Preschool to present a project that they had been working. The ASL 3 students (Sophie Berry ‘20, Natalie Maljian ‘20, Jonah Molina ‘20, Brandi Powell ‘20, and Camille Reindorf ‘20) visited the preschool classroom of Maranatha alumnus Kristen Gallardo ‘09 and translated some of their favorite children’s books into American Sign Language.

Mrs. Douglass said, “The 3 and 4 year-olds sat engaged with each story. One of the Maranatha students would hold the children’s book, read the story, and show the pictures, while another Maranatha student would translate it using ASL. After the students presented their story, they would then teach the preschoolers one new sign.” The children’s books that the ASL 3 class chose to translate were “How to Babysit Grandma,” “Butterfly Garden,” “Ten Little Fish,” “If You Give a Moose a Muffin,” and “Curious George Curious Kittens.”

The trip and presentations to Pasadena Christian Preschool was a great success and Mrs. Douglass hopes to make this an end of the year tradition for future ASL 3 classes.
