Victoria Luo '20 Advances to Regional Speech and Debate Tournament

On Wednesday, March 13, junior Victoria Luo competed in the Club Level round of the Rotary Four Way Test Speech Tournament.
The Rotary Four Way Test Speech Tournament’s Club Level is round 3 of a 5 round tournament over several months. Victoria captured the Rotarians’ attention at the prelims in January with a captivating and heartwarming message about the struggles that Chinese Americans face today. The theme of this year’s competition is “Be the Inspiration.” Victoria inspired everyone in the room on Wednesday as she demonstrated mastery in oration, a skill she has worked on endlessly this year with her Speech and Debate coach and faculty member Mr. Pat Mesisca ‘92. Victoria bested contestants from San Marino High School and La Salle High School to advance to the Regional Level at the Montebello Country Club on April 17.

Mr. Mesisca said, “I am so proud of Victoria’s accomplishment. She has worked extremely hard to master the English language and fine-tune the skills and writing that are necessary to succeed at this level of competition. I have coached many talented students over the years and Victoria is one of my hardest working and most persistent students. The message her speech conveys is one that everyone needs to hear.”

Maranatha will be offering a Speech and Debate course during their Summer Academy that will be a three-week session from June 17 to July 5. This course is a UC approved English elective for students interested in improving their written and oral communication skills for the 2019-2020 school year.
