Maranatha Students Place First at WAICY

Congratulations to Dorothy Chen ‘22, Harper Tzou ‘22, and Timothy Chen ‘23 on achieving 1st Place at the 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth (WAICY).
The three Maranatha High School students, sophomores Dorothy Chen and Harper Tzou and freshman Timothy Chen, traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this past summer to compete in the 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth.

Dorothy, Harper, and Timothy focused on the five “Big Ideas” for their design, which are: 1) Computers perceive the world using sensors, 2) Agents maintain models/representations of the world and use them for reasoning, 3) Computers can learn from data, 4) Making agents interact comfortably with humans is a substantial challenge for AI developers, and 5) AI applications can impact society in both positive and negative ways.

Using the AI Five Big Ideas as the focus, the trio designed their "Cozmo Family Grocers" to help future shoppers in an Artificial Intelligence (Cozmo) assisted store. The Cozmo (AI Robot) can get the items shoppers needed (milk, meat, etc.), and Cozmo also recognized shoppers' faces and recommended items to them. These students implemented their idea using a Cozmo - AI Robot with Machine Learning capability in a two months training and testing period (May - July 2019).

The team, who were coached by MHS parent volunteer Jacky Chen, won 1st Place in the Divisional award, and also received the highest score for all age groups winning 1st Place in the "AI - Five Big Ideas Award.” Dorothy, Harper, and Timothy carefully prepared for the competition, demonstrated creative thinking, maintained teamwork spirit, and won the unanimous affirmation from the WAICY judges.

Congratulations to Dorothy, Harper, and Timothy for an outstanding accomplishment!
